Speech Therapy

Teletherapy

Teletherapy is also called Online Therapy. It is a practice of conducting Speech Therapy remotely using a virtual platform or video connection. Teletherapy sessions are in most ways similar to sessions taken in a clinical set up, the only difference is that the therapist is not in the same room as the client and there is an additional use of technology to connect the therapist and the client and/or caregiver. It does have its pros and cons but Teletherapy is best solution for a person who cannot physically make it to the clinic. In my opinion, those who would prefer Teletherapy as the mode of treatment should try and visit the clinic in certain intervals as some skills are worked on in person.

2. Hearing screening

Hearing screening is quick test performed by an Audiologist to determine if one has a hearing impairment or no. It is a very comfortable test and needs hardly a few minutes.  It will only indicate presence or absence of hearing loss. In cases of normal hearing the result will show PASS else REFER. In case you get a REFER, you need to go for a more detailed hearing assessment.

Such a quick test is usually preferred for small babies or younger children who cannot sit through a full hearing test. It is frequently done when they are asleep.

3. Hearing evaluation

Hearing evaluation is done by an Audiologist. It involves few tests which estimate the level of hearing in each ear and the health of the middle ear. In some of the tests, you may need to listen carefully and respond accordingly and in others, you just have to sit quietly while the test is conducted.

After undergoing such an evaluation, the audiologist will be able to tell you if you have a hearing loss or not, whether both your ears are affected or only one, and how severe the hearing loss is. In certain cases, it could also indicate the causative factors responsible for the hearing impairment. After going over the test results with you, the audiologist will recommend various treatment options and you will be able to discuss and choose which hearing solution suits you the best.

You will receive a report with an audiogram that will mention the type of hearing loss and the degree of hearing loss.

4. Aural Rehabilitation

Aural rehabilitation is helping an individual with hearing impairment overcome the difficulties they face due to the Hearing Loss. This includes making them understand the HL and giving an appropriate hearing solution, working on their verbal communication and ability to listen. This is aimed at improving their ability to participate and function in society.

5. Voice therapy

Voice therapy is necessary in cases where the production of voice is affected e.g. hoarseness of voice. This is a procedure that helps in the improvement of the various aspects of voice namely pitch, volume and quality. It includes better vocal habits.

6. Articulation Therapy

Articulation therapy is needed when an individual makes errors in the production of speech sounds and the intelligibility of the speech is reduced. All the speech sounds are first assessed and to understand where these errors occur. In the therapy, the correct sound is demonstrated and the child is shown ways in which these could be produced.
